Chambers Construction of Eugene is constructing a storage building and renovating the former Brattain International Trucks building. A second Cash&Carry is coming to Eugene-Springfield. The grocer’s Portland-based owner announced Tuesday that it will open a Cash&Carry Smart Foodservice in late August at 3585 Gateway Street, near Interstate 5 and Randy Papé Beltline. The company already has a Cash&Carry in Eugene at 4214 W. Fifth Ave.
Geared to restaurants, the stores offer large quantities of produce, meats, deli and dairy products, frozen foods, beverages, catering and janitorial supplies, and tableware, according to the company. The retailer sells to other customers, including church groups, caterers and anyone else looking to purchase in bulk. “We buy in volume at the best possible prices and pass those savings along to our customers,” John Mathews, vice president of sales and marketing, said in a press release. The 23,000-square-foot Springfield store will be the 19th Cash&Carry in Oregon, according to its owner, Smart Foodservice. The company has more than 50 stores in Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada and Washington. Chambers Construction of Eugene is building the store by constructing a storage building and renovating the former Brattain International Trucks building near Gateway Street and International Way. The cost of the project is $3.2 million, according to City of Springfield building permits. Construction workers were busy Tuesday at the new Cash&Carry, which faces Gateway Street. Near the construction site a “coming soon” sign included the company’s slogan, “Where Restaurants Buy Better.” Brattain International Trucks, which sells and services International big rigs, had leased the Gateway property but moved in 2014 to West First Avenue and South Bertelsen Road, said general manager Dave Mecheler. Brattain owns the property in west Eugene, where it constructed a new building. The company also has dealerships in Bend, Albany, Salem and Portland.
